A new global ranking reveals which countries rely the most on tourism as a share of their national economy. According to the latest analysis, Macao leads the world, where international tourism accounts for about 70.8% of GDP.

OPTION TRIP – Other economies heavily dependent on travel include Aruba (69.7%), Maldives (68.1%), Andorra (66.5%), and Saint Lucia (53.8%). The data highlights a clear trend: small island nations and resort-driven destinations dominate the top of the list, where tourism often represents a major source of employment, foreign currency, and economic growth.

Large diversified economies appear much lower in the ranking. For example, the United States ranks around 151st, where tourism contributes only about 0.86% of GDP, despite generating more than $250 billion in tourism revenue.

Globally, tourism remains one of the largest industries in the world. Experts estimate that travel and tourism could contribute $11.7 trillion to global GDP in 2025, representing roughly 10% of the global economy.

However, countries highly dependent on tourism can also be more vulnerable to global disruptions such as pandemics, travel restrictions, or economic downturns.
