Updated October 22, 2026. San Francisco is one city where a single detail can change the best ticket choice: Alcatraz. Regular San Francisco CityPASS options and the CityPASS + Alcatraz bundle are not interchangeable. Before buying, travelers should decide whether visiting the island is essential and whether a preferred departure time is available.
What is San Francisco CityPASS + Alcatraz?
According to the official 2026–27 CityPASS guide, the special package includes an Alcatraz City Cruises Day Tour plus the choice of three other attractions. Choices may include California Academy of Sciences, Blue & Gold Fleet’s San Francisco Bay Cruise, Exploratorium, Aquarium of the Bay, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Walt Disney Family Museum, and the de Young Museum + Legion of Honor offer. Verify current attraction inclusions at checkout.
Importantly, travelers using the CityPASS + Alcatraz product choose their Alcatraz Day Tour date during purchase. The official rules require that date to fall within the same nine-day pass window. This makes it different from an ordinary open-ended ticket: a changed flight or short visit may mean your preferred tour no longer fits.
A practical three-day itinerary
Day 1: Alcatraz and the waterfront
Reserve the island tour in advance. Allow for check-in procedures, ferry timing, walking and weather. Treat any additional bay cruise as a separate experience; it is not automatically included just because one Alcatraz ferry is in the package.
Day 2: Golden Gate Park and science
Use a selected admission at the California Academy of Sciences or consider a different museum depending on the age of travelers and interests. San Francisco’s weather can shift quickly, so an indoor option provides a useful backup.
Day 3: Art, neighborhoods and a final choice
Choose another included visit, such as SFMOMA or the Exploratorium, if your ticket selection permits it. Factor in travel time before planning multiple neighborhoods back to back.
What about San Francisco C3 or ordinary CityPASS?
The official comparison chart lists several ticket types. C3 is meant for three attractions; the standard CityPASS gives a different four-attraction selection; the CityPASS + Alcatraz option explicitly includes the Alcatraz Day Tour. Only the correct product includes the tour, so avoid choosing by the number of attractions alone.
How to avoid booking mistakes
- Choose your Alcatraz visit date before setting nonrefundable hotel or flight plans.
- Confirm which attractions need timed reservations and whether dates are available.
- Check the ticket’s nine-consecutive-day period and cancellation terms.
- Compare the total cost against standalone admissions for the actual attractions you will use.
- Make plans for transit, hills and weather instead of treating every included attraction as next door.

Frequently asked questions
Is Alcatraz included in every San Francisco CityPASS?
No. Choose the specific CityPASS + Alcatraz variant or a separately sold official Alcatraz ticket if you want the island tour.
Can I reserve Alcatraz after purchasing the special package?
For the current CityPASS + Alcatraz product, the official instructions say the Alcatraz Day Tour date must be chosen at the time of purchase.
Does the included ferry replace another cruise?
No. An Alcatraz transfer is not the same product as a general sightseeing bay cruise. Read the admissions descriptions carefully.
