Road-Tripping the U.S. or Canada? How to Compare Budget Motel Stays Before Booking

When you drive across the United States or Canada, a hotel can be more than a place to sleep. A useful overnight stop should fit your route, check-in time, parking needs, traveling companions and final budget. Economy brands such as Motel 6 are worth considering alongside independent properties, but a recognizable sign does not guarantee the best available rate.

Five checks before booking a roadside stay

1. Check the full stay cost. Compare the actual payable total for your dates rather than a nightly teaser, including any required taxes and fees.
2. Confirm pet arrangements. Motel 6 promotes pet-friendly lodging, but verify the specific property’s current animal, deposit and room rules before arrival.
3. Map the actual stop. An inexpensive motel far from your route can cost more in fuel and time than a closer alternative.
4. Review check-in and cancellation conditions. Late arrival, changing schedules and an uncertain road trip can make flexibility more valuable than a small headline discount.
5. Confirm the exact hotel and room. Parking, accessibility, air conditioning, bed arrangement and room amenities vary by property.

How My6 offers should be understood

Promotional materials for Motel 6’s My6 program sometimes feature savings of up to 15%. That is a conditional traveler promotion—not a guaranteed rate at every location or a statement about publisher commissions. Check the current terms and price shown by the booking provider.
